Electrochemistry

The study of the relationship between chemical change and electrical energy.

Unit V

In depth

Electrochemistry covers both directions of conversion: spontaneous reactions generating current in galvanic cells, and current forcing non-spontaneous reactions in electrolytic cells. It underpins batteries, fuel cells, corrosion science, metal extraction, electroplating and a wide range of sensors.

Examples in the real world

A torch battery converting chemical energy to electricity; electrolysis extracting aluminium from molten ore.
