A device in which a redox reaction and an electric current are interconverted through two separated electrodes.

Separating oxidation from reduction forces the electrons to travel through an external wire, where their energy can be used or supplied. The two half-cells must be connected internally by a salt bridge or porous barrier so that charge does not build up and stop the reaction.

A Daniell cell, an alkaline battery, and an electrolysis cell for producing chlorine.
