Acid–Base Titration

A titration in which an acid is neutralised by a base, or the reverse, monitored by an indicator or a pH meter.

Formula / equation M_aV_a / n_a = M_bV_b / n_b
Unit mol/L

In depth

The choice of indicator depends on the pH at the equivalence point, which is 7 only when both reagents are strong. Weak acid with strong base gives an alkaline equivalence point, and weak base with strong acid an acidic one.

Examples in the real world

Determining the acetic acid content of vinegar by titrating against standardised NaOH with phenolphthalein.
