NSDL was established in 1996 and began the dematerialisation of Indian securities, which ended the era of physical certificates, forged transfers and bad deliveries. Its account numbers are 16 characters starting with IN, which is the quickest way to tell which depository an account belongs to. It also operates infrastructure beyond equities, including for government securities and the national pension system. Functionally NSDL and CDSL are interchangeable for an investor; the choice is made by the broker rather than the client, and transfers between them work normally.
Worked example
An account number beginning IN30 identifies an NSDL account, while a purely numeric 16-digit number identifies CDSL. Shares transfer between the two without difficulty, and the distinction rarely matters to the holder.
