CDSL

The Central Depository Services Limited, India's second depository, holding securities in electronic form.

How it is identified Test: the demat account number is a 16-digit numeric identifier
Unit qualitative

In depth

CDSL was established in 1999 to end NSDL's monopoly, and competition between the two lowered depository charges materially. Its accounts are purely numeric 16-digit numbers, in contrast to NSDL's alphanumeric format beginning with IN. CDSL is itself listed on the exchanges, which makes it an unusual case of market infrastructure being publicly traded. Both depositories send holding and transaction alerts directly to the investor's registered email and phone, and those alerts are the independent check on what a broker reports.

Worked example

A CDSL alert arrives reporting a debit of 500 shares the investor did not authorise. The message comes from the depository rather than the broker, which is exactly why it is worth reading rather than filtering.

Illustrative figures, chosen so the arithmetic is easy to follow. Not a live price and not a valuation of any company.
