Work Hardening

The strengthening of a metal by plastic deformation, caused by dislocation multiplication and entanglement obstructing further slip.

Also known as strain hardening or cold working. Deforming a metal increases dislocation density ρ_dislocation. Dislocations intersect and form tangles that pin one another, requiring higher shear stress to continue plastic deformation.
