Polaron

A composite quasiparticle consisting of a conduction electron (or hole) bound together with its surrounding self-induced lattice polarization distortion cloud in an ionic crystal.

As a charged electron moves through an ionic crystal lattice, it repels negative ions and attracts positive ions, creating a localized polarization potential well that moves with the electron, increasing its effective mass m*.
