Resultant Vector

The single combined vector that produces the exact same net physical effect as two or more individual vectors acting simultaneously.

Resultant vectors are computed analytically by summing orthogonal components (Rx = ∑ Ax, Ry = ∑ Ay) or graphically using vector polygon tip-to-tail addition.

Examples in the real world

A boat rowing East at 4 m/s across a river flowing North at 3 m/s has a resultant velocity vector of 5 m/s at 36.9° North of East.
