Even spacing produces a steady, mechanical rhythm; irregular spacing produces a syncopated one that feels more alive. Rhythm differs from pattern in that it need not be uniform — a receding row of arches whose spacing compresses with distance sets up an accelerating beat that pulls the eye into the frame.

Bollards receding along a promenade appear progressively closer together, accelerating the eye toward the distance.
