A number describing the contrast of a graded photographic paper, from soft grade 0 to very hard grade 5.

Each grade suits a different negative density range: a flat, thin negative needs a hard grade to gain contrast, while a dense contrasty one needs a soft grade to hold both ends. Grade 2 is nominally normal. The system was largely displaced by variable contrast paper, which delivers the same range from one box.

A negative from an overcast day prints flat on grade 2 and comes to life on grade 4.
