Log Profile

A recording curve that stores tonal information logarithmically to preserve maximum dynamic range for grading.

Measured in stops

In depth

Log distributes the available code values evenly across stops rather than weighting them toward the highlights, which retains one to three extra stops of range compared with a standard curve. Footage looks flat and desaturated until a conversion is applied, and it needs generous exposure and a capable codec to avoid banding.

Examples in practice

Log footage graded into Rec. 709 retains cloud detail that a standard profile would have clipped.
