An electronic shutter is completely silent, free of vibration, and capable of extremely high speeds and frame rates. On most sensors it reads out line by line rather than all at once, which introduces rolling-shutter skew, limits flash use, and can produce banding under pulsed artificial light. Cameras with stacked sensors read fast enough to make these problems largely academic.
