Asymmetrical Balance
A composition in which unequal elements are arranged so the frame still feels stable overall.
In depth
Balance is a matter of visual weight rather than area, so a small bright object can hold against a large dark mass on the other side of the frame. Asymmetry gives energy that symmetry cannot, because the eye keeps moving between elements rather than settling on an axis — which is why most photographs aim for it.
