Solutions & Colligative Properties

Solubility

The maximum quantity of a solute that dissolves in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature to give a saturated solution.

Formula / equation S = g solute / 100 g solvent
Unit g/100 g

In depth

Solubility depends on the solute, the solvent, temperature and, for gases, pressure. Most solids become more soluble as temperature rises, whereas gases always become less soluble. A substance is conventionally called soluble above 1 g per 100 g of solvent and insoluble below 0.1 g.

Examples in the real world

NaCl dissolves 36 g per 100 g of water at 25 °C; AgCl only 0.00019 g; oxygen just 8 mg per litre.
