Indian Market, Regulation & Taxation

National Stock Exchange

India's largest stock exchange by trading volume, established in 1992 and fully electronic from the outset.

How it is identified Test: the security is admitted to trading on the NSE, whose benchmark index is the Nifty 50
Unit qualitative

In depth

The NSE's arrival ended the era of floor trading and broker cartels by introducing screen-based, nationwide, anonymous order matching, which compressed spreads dramatically and extended market access beyond Mumbai. It dominates equity derivatives volumes in India and operates the Nifty family of indices through a subsidiary. Its co-location controversy, which ran through Indian regulation for years, concerned whether some members obtained faster access than others — a dispute about equality of access rather than about the practice itself. Most Indian equity trading happens here, though most large stocks are listed on both main exchanges.

Worked example

A stock listed on both exchanges typically shows the vast majority of its volume on the NSE. The BSE price can differ by a paisa or two, which is where inter-exchange arbitrage operates.

Illustrative figures, chosen so the arithmetic is easy to follow. Not a live price and not a valuation of any company.
