Contrarian Investing
Deliberately taking positions against prevailing sentiment, on the argument that consensus is already in the price.
How it is identified
Test: the position is taken because sentiment is one-sided, with an independent basis for believing the consensus is wrong

In depth
Contrarianism works only when the consensus is wrong, which is a separate question from whether it is unanimous — being different is not the same as being right, and the crowd is correct most of the time. Its defensible form pairs the sentiment observation with independent analysis; its indefensible form treats unpopularity as sufficient. Timing is the practical difficulty, since a mispricing can widen for years and a leveraged contrarian is destroyed before being vindicated. It is psychologically demanding precisely because it removes the comfort of agreement, which is why few sustain it.
Worked example
A sector trades at half its long-run multiple with universally negative commentary. The contrarian position requires a reason the pessimism is overdone — the pessimism alone is equally consistent with the sector being permanently impaired.
