AMFI

The Association of Mutual Funds in India, the industry body that sets standards and publishes industry data.

In depth

AMFI is a self-regulatory industry body rather than a regulator, which means its role is standards, registration of distributors and data publication rather than enforcement. Its most consequential output for investors is the half-yearly list ranking listed companies by average market capitalisation, which determines the large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap boundaries every mutual fund must classify against. A company moving across that boundary can force funds to buy or sell it, a flow driven by a list rather than by results. AMFI also publishes monthly industry data on flows and assets, which is the primary source for tracking where retail money is going.

Worked example

A company ranked 96th is large-cap. At the next half-yearly review it ranks 104th and becomes mid-cap, and large-cap funds holding it must reduce the position regardless of what its earnings did.

Illustrative figures, chosen so the arithmetic is easy to follow. Not a live price and not a valuation of any company.

This entry explains what “AMFI” means. It is not investment advice and not a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Any numbers above are illustrative, not live prices, and nothing here predicts price direction or rates a stock. Consider your own circumstances and consult a SEBI-registered investment adviser before acting.
