Miller Indices

A standardized three-integer crystallographic notation system (h k l) used to specify direction vectors and orientation of planes in a crystal lattice.

Governing formula (h k l) = Reciprocals of lattice axis intercepts
SI unit Dimensionless Notation System

In depth

Determined by taking the fractional intercepts of a crystal plane with the unit cell axes (a, b, c), clearing fractions, and reducing to lowest integers (h k l). Square brackets [h k l] represent lattice directions.

Examples in the real world

(1 0 0), (1 1 0), and (1 1 1) planes defining primary slicing directions in silicon semiconductor crystal growth.
