Classical Mechanics

Apparent Weight

The effective weight of a body, equal to the normal contact force supporting it in an accelerating frame.

Governing formula W_app = m (g + a)
SI unit N

In depth

Accelerating upward increases normal force and apparent weight; accelerating downward decreases apparent weight. Free fall causes weightlessness (W_app = 0).

Examples in the real world

Feeling heavier when an elevator accelerates upward, or weightlessness during orbital free fall.
