Adiabatic Process

A thermodynamic process in which no heat is transferred into or out of the system.

In adiabatic compression, work done on the gas increases its internal energy and temperature. In adiabatic expansion, work done by the gas causes rapid cooling.

Rapid compression in a diesel engine cylinder heating air enough to ignite injected fuel without a spark plug.
