X-Trans Filter

An alternative colour filter array using a six-by-six pattern with green in every row and column.

Formula / rule 6×6 repeating unit

In depth

The larger, less regular pattern breaks up the periodicity that causes moiré, which allowed the design to omit an optical low-pass filter and gain apparent sharpness. The cost is that demosaicing is more complex, and some raw converters historically rendered fine foliage with a smeared, watercolour-like texture.

Examples in practice

An X-Trans sensor photographs a fine herringbone jacket without the colour moiré a Bayer sensor might produce.
