Focus & Depth of Field

Release Priority

A setting that fires the shutter whenever the button is pressed, regardless of whether focus has been confirmed.

In depth

Release priority accepts that some frames will be soft in exchange for never missing an instant, which is the correct trade in sports and news. Many cameras offer a middle setting that prioritises release for the first frame and focus for subsequent ones in a burst, on the reasoning that the first frame is the one most likely to be irreplaceable.

Examples in practice

A goal celebration is captured at the instant of impact even though autofocus had not fully settled.
