A contact printing process using platinum or palladium salts, giving an exceptionally long tonal scale and great permanence.
In depth
The image is formed of platinum metal embedded in the paper fibres rather than suspended in an emulsion layer, which gives a matte surface with a delicate, luminous midtone range and no surface sheen at all. Platinum is chemically inert, so a well-made print is among the most permanent photographic objects possible.
Examples in practice
A platinum print from an 8×10 negative shows a gradation through the midtones that silver gelatin cannot match.
