Magnification is the most accurate focusing aid available, because it shows the actual captured detail rather than an inference about it. Typical steps are 5×, 10× and sometimes 16×, and the magnified region can usually be moved anywhere in the frame. It is essential for macro, architecture, astrophotography and any tripod work with a fast lens.

At 10× magnification, a star resolves from a small blob into a point when infinity focus is exactly right.
