Field Camera

A folding large-format camera built light enough to carry, trading some movement range for portability.

In depth

Where a monorail view camera is a studio instrument on a rail, a field camera folds into a wooden or metal box and rides in a rucksack. The compromise is usually in rear movements and bellows extension, which limits close focus with long lenses. For landscape work, where front tilt and modest rise cover almost every need, the loss is rarely felt.

Examples in practice

A 4×5 field camera, three lenses and ten film holders fit into a daypack for a week in the mountains.
