Shooting a rapid sequence of frames at different exposures around the metered value, as insurance or as source material for merging.

A three-frame bracket at ±2 EV covers most high-contrast scenes; five or seven frames at 1 EV spacing suit interiors with visible windows. The technique demands a still subject or a fast burst, since any movement between frames will ghost in the merge. Combined with a tripod and mirror lock-up it is the foundation of exposure fusion and HDR work.
Examples in practice
An estate photographer brackets seven frames of a lounge so both the sofa's fabric and the garden through the window survive the merge.
