AVIF generally beats both JPEG and WebP at low bitrates and supports twelve-bit colour and HDR, making it attractive for web delivery of demanding images. Encoding is slow and its performance advantage narrows at high quality settings, where the difference against a well-tuned JPEG becomes small.
Examples in practice
A hero image delivered as AVIF loads noticeably faster on mobile than the same picture as a quality-80 JPEG.
